Writing Prompt Wednesday-Workplace Disaster

Writing Prompt #13
Write about a weird day in your workplace

This isn't really a weird day, it was just a little out of the ordinary.

Last week Brian and the kids brought me lunch. After we finished eating I took the kids around to see some of my friends. We finished making the rounds and had stopped at my desk to get Hayden a lollipop before I walked them down to the car to say goodbye.

Hayden put his arms around me. "Me don't want to go, me want to stay with you." He said.

My heart melted. Brian started going on about how bored he would be and that he couldn't stay. I thought for a minute. "Do you want to help Mommy work and ride home on the bus?" I asked

His face lit up. "Yes!"

Brian gave me a doubtful look. I assured him that there would be plenty to entertain him. My only issue was that I didn't have any diapers but I was pretty sure I would be OK, it was only 2 hours. I would have kept Quinn too but I knew I wouldn't be able to go 2 hours without any diapers for her. She is a little more unpredictable than Hayden.

We walked Brian and Quinnie out to the car. Hayden had some toys in the car that we grabbed so he could play while I worked. The first hour or so went good. He colored pictures for my co-workers, walked around with me, played with his toys, and made my coworkers smile. He told me "Me want to stay here forever!" and "I'm happy Momma!!"

Then, in the middle of coloring a picture he started grunting. "Me need to take a potty!!" He said. The bathroom was far away and I was pretty sure he already pooped. He always tells us when its too late. Potty training is a work in progress. As we took the long walk to the bathroom I contemplated what to do. If his poop was more solid I would just dump it into the toilet and put a paper towel over it and put the diaper back on him until we got home. Gross, I know, but what other option did I have?

We got into the stall and I assessed the damage. It was his typical sticky, messy poop. No way I could reuse the diaper. I didn't even have any wipes. I used wet paper towels to clean him up and put his shorts back on without a diaper. I told him we needed to go back to my desk for a minute. I couldn't leave him without a diaper, if he had to pee it was a long walk to the bathroom and I didn't have a change of clothes. I contemplated a plastic bag and some tape but it was hot outside. I would feel bad taping a plastic bag around his bum and then waiting for the bus at the hottest part of the day.

Then I was inspired. There was a sample newborn diaper in the pumping room. I often wondered why no one had taken it home! I guess this was the reason. We walked to the pumping room and I prayed it would fit him. Good thing he's a beanpole! I was barely able to fit it around him. It looked like a speedo! But it must have been somewhat comfortable on him because he never complained or pulled on it.

Thank goodness no one took that diaper home!!!

After that ordeal it was almost time to go home. Hayden entertained himself by putting tape on my calendar and throwing his baseball down the hallway by my desk. Then we walked to the bus. The ride home was the highlight of his day. When I put him in his car seat to go home he told me "Me want to go back!" I told him he could soon.

I better stock up my desk with diapers and wipes!

That sounds like an awesome afternoon! SO glad you were able to solve the diaper problem : ) Genius! It's funny that kids think our offices are so exciting. When my son doesn't want to go to school he says 'I wish I got to go to your job every day. You have fun there.' : ) If only he knew how much fun it was!

I think I would much rather go back to school than have to work! Tell your son you can trade! :)

"I'm happy, Momma." How sweet. I can't wait until Ransom can say things like that to me. Well, he'll probably also tell me he hates me and to go away. But the sweet things will make it all worthwhile. :)

He tells me plenty of times when I take a toy away or do something he doesn't like to go back to work. Such a silly boy. I'm sure Ransom will say more sweet things than mean things. That's how Hayden is right now. Boys are so wonderful!
