The Family Bed

Our kids sleep with us.

I remember saying once when I had no kids and no idea that my kids would NEVER sleep with me. This was definitely not what we had planned.

It all started when Hayden was born. I found that I got more sleep when he slept next to me. When he woke up in the night I would latch him on to a boob and go back to sleep. It was much easier than getting up and sitting in the rocking chair, nursing and rocking him back to sleep. Brian wasn't too thrilled but I told him that this was the best thing for us to do since I was working and needed to get as much sleep as possible. He reluctantly agreed.

When Hayden was 2 years old we moved in with my parents so Brian could go to school full time. Space was limited and we had no choice but to share a bedroom. This will be our arrangement for 2 more years! Our bedroom is bigger than normal and has room for our queen sized bed, a twin bed, a love seat, 2 dressers and our huge flat screen TV.

We decided to try out putting Hayden to bed in the twin. At the time he was still waking up once at night to nurse, so I slept with him most of the night. Shortly after he turned 2, I believe it was in February, Hayden started sleeping through the night (!!!) I found out I was pregnant in March and sometime in the summer I was not able to sleep in our bed anymore. For some reason my growing body didn't like our super soft mattress. So I kicked Hayden out of his bed. His much firmer twin mattress was perfect for me. Hayden and Brian shared a bed for a long time. It was so cute when I woke up in the night to see Hayden snuggled next to his Daddy.

Recently we have changed our sleeping arrangements again. For a long time (mostly because Quinn was fussy) I slept with Quinn in Hayden's bed and Hayden and Brian shared the queen bed. Now Hayden sleeps in his bed again, and Brian and I share our bed with Quinn. It seems to be going pretty well. Hayden, in the last 4 or 5 months has been able to fall asleep without someone there to cuddle him. Our bed time routine used to be someone would lay with him until he was asleep. Now we have prayer, give him a hug and a kiss and tell him to go to "beep".

I share the details of our sleeping arrangements because I want people to know how wonderful it really is. I get much more sleep because I don't have to get out of bed to feed a baby. I don't even have to fully wake up! I also love having my husband snuggled on one side of me and a sweet baby on my other side. She's becoming a lot like Hayden where she has to have a warm body next to her. When I get out of bed during the week to get ready for work she wiggles over to her daddy and snuggles up next to him. <3

This is what our family bed looks like (minus Brian, he was taking the picture):
