Kahlan's name

Kahlan Rose, our little surprise baby. That's a story for a whole 'nother post!

I found out I was pregnant very early. I had been charting my cycles and interestingly enough, this was the first cycle I ovulated. I had also just told Brian we probably didn't need to use birth control since it took me so long to get pregnant with Quinn.

Ha! Boy was I wrong!

I suspected I was pregnant pretty soon after that. I told Brian. He didn't believe me. I decided I would take a test on October 16th. The day before I took that test I told Brian again, I said I am 99.9999% sure I'm pregnant. He told me that I probably wasn't. The next morning I peed on a stick. Without looking at it I hopped into the shower and tried to convince myself that I wasn't pregnant, so I wouldn't be disappointed if the test was negative. I got out of the shower and barely dried off before I looked at the test. It was positive! I calculated that I was about 4.5 weeks along.

Brian and I didn't start discussing names until I was about 7 weeks pregnant. We waited a whole 2.5 weeks! That's pretty amazing for us! One day while I was in the shower, Brian comes in with his tablet and sits down on the toilet and starts reading me names.

One of them was Kahlan (he pronounced it kay-lan). "Oooh, I like that name. How is it spelled?" I asked

"K-A-H-L-A-N"

"Oh." I said "Can we change the spelling? No one is going to pronounce it correctly."

"Nope, we spell it this way or we don't use it."

I liked the name. But with the way it was spelled I wasn't even sure Brian was saying it correctly. He found the name from a tv show he'd been watching called The Legend of the Seeker which was loosely based off of a book series called The Sword of Truth. He pulled up an episode on netflix where the main character says her name. He was saying it right. I told him if we used it her middle name would be Rose, after my great aunt. He agreed. I still wasn't fond of the spelling but I figured I wouldn't argue until we found out what we were having.

I didn't have any feelings at first as to what we were having, not like I did with Hayden and Quinn. The first trimester wasn't nearly as bad as it was with Quinn, and I had a lot of the same cravings as I did with Hayden. So I convinced myself that I was having a boy. We couldn't come to an agreement on boys names right away. I really liked Rowan and Asher and Brian kept throwing out one name that I kept turning down because it was the name of an annoying cartoon Hayden liked to watch. Brian wouldn't give up. It was an Irish name, which I seem to be a sucker for. And I liked the meaning. I finally caved in (And yes there's a reason I'm not sharing it. It is being saved in case we have another boy in the future). We threw around some middle names but we didn't come to any conclusions at that point.

Hayden, being a little older this pregnancy came up with a nickname for the baby: Tinkles. We asked him if Tinkles was a boy or a girl and he said boy. We took Hayden to the gender reveal ultrasound. Right off the bat, Trish, the tech said "You're having a boy!" Hayden was so excited. I kept thinking to myself "I'm right again!" but something just didn't feel right. It was a few minutes later that Trish said "Uh-oh, I think I saw the cord between the baby's legs. Yup, this one is definitely a girl!"

Ooops!

Yeah, Hayden wasn't very happy when we said, "Nevermind! We're having a girl!" We barely avoided a tantrum in the ultrasound room! It took him a few hours, but he warmed up to the thought of having two baby sisters.

So now I needed to convince Brian to spell the name differently. I wanted to spell it Kaelan. When I told a friend of mine the names we picked out, and how Brian wanted to spell her name she said that Kahlan looked more Irish to her. Like I said, I'm a sucker for Irish names. I also started reading The Sword of Truth book series. I really liked how the character, Kahlan Amnell was portrayed. She was such a good person. I decided that even if people butchered her name, I liked the idea of using the spelling from the book, and naming her after such a good character. A friend of mine posted about the characters from the Sword of Truth book series here
